MANCHESTER CITY 0 : 1 WIGAN ATHLETICS
Wigan won the F.A. Cup for the first time in its 81-year history, beating big-spending Manchester City, 1-0, on Saturday in one of the tournament’s biggest final upsets.
Ben Watson scored on a header off Shaun Maloney’s corner kick in the 90th minute at Wembley Stadium in London, six minutes after City defender Pablo Zabaleta was given a red card after his second caution.
Watson had only just returned to action after recovering from a broken leg.
“It’s been a long six months for myself and it’s been a dream — coming on in an F.A. Cup final and scoring the winner,” Watson said.
Wigan, based near Manchester, put together its roster for less than $30 million, while City’s cost more than 10 times than amount. But there was no Champagne for its players after the match. Now they will try to avoid the dubious distinction of being the first F.A. Cup winner to be relegated in the same season. Wigan is 18th in the 20-team Premier League with two games remaining.
“We’ve got two massive games now to stay in the league,” Watson said of the remaining games against Arsenal and Aston Villa, “and if we perform like that we’ll be all right.”
